The Steinheim Basin was originally interpreted as a volcanic crater.
The drilling carried out showed that it is a meteorite impact crater.
The crater probably formed about 14-15 million years ago together with the much larger Nördlinger Ries crater.
In Steinheim it was an iron meteorite or Steineisen that almost completely evaporated upon impact.
The crater was originally about 200 m deep, the central hill in the middle was created by the retreat of the crater floor during the impact.
Radiant limestone formed when the shock wave from the impact passed through freshwater limestone.
They are now considered evidence of a meteorite impact and have now been found all over the world.
The piece offered is a relic and was found between 1990 and 2005.
